Originally published in black and white on the inside cover of the Mr. Natural #2 comic book (1971), this image was released in color as a tin sign by Kitchen Sink Press in 1995. But Robert was not completely happy with the colors. For this edition he created a beautiful color rough with watercolor, which Wildwood Serigraphs translated faithfully into this 16-color edition. We made it slightly smaller than our usual prints so it could fit in most kitchens (Robert likes his images smaller anyway, but that's another story.) Each print comes with its own certificate of authenticity, which has copy written by Robert on both front and back.

Paper size: 18" x 26", Image size: 12" x 18"
Edition limited to 160 signed & numbered serigraphs.

Janis Joplin

This new serigraph edition of 100 signed portraits is a reworking of a 1969 illustration Robert had done for a Cleveland newspaper (while he was visiting). This is a rare opportunity to buy a portrait of Robert's old friend Janis, who he befriended in San Francisco before she became famous nationally. He has also written the Certificate of Authenticity, which accompanies each print, and he recalls her as only Robert can.
This edition compensates the Janis Joplin Estate for the use of her likeness and name.

The paper used is Rives BFK archival white paper. The print is shipped flat by Priority Mail, and we ship within 48 hours of receiving each order. Each print comes with our unconditional guarantee for your satisfaction or your money back.

Bob & Harv's Comics Signed & Numbered Serigraph Print

Wildwood Serigraphs is proud to release this 170 print serigraph edition signed by both Robert Crumb and Harvey Pekar. Throughout most of the 1970's, Crumb illustrated many stories written and published by Harvey Pekar (released in his American Splendor comic book). These stories were collected and later published as a book in the mid-1990's, with this image as its cover.

Each Wildwood prints comes with our full guarantee for your complete satisfaction or your money back.

Tommy The Toilet

This edition not only brought back Dale from 1969, but also introduced a few new serigraphic printing tricks. Yes, there is a beautiful sky blue blend (color blends are a trademark of Wildwood’s) and that’s to be expected. But there are some new separation tricks to be found in Dale’s boots and gloves, giving that leather feel without competing with Robert’s line work.

Crumb Giclees

GICLEES: Giclée, (commonly pronounced "zhee-CLAY"), is an invented term for the process of making fine art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing. The word “giclée” (from the French verb gicler meaning "to squirt, to spray"), was originally applied to fine art prints created on Iris printers in a process invented in the early 1990s, but has since come to mean any high quality ink-jet print.

All our giclees are printed on Somerset heavyweight enhanced archival paper. We use Epson Ultrachrome inks. For more information about Ultrachrome inks, go to this link. The giclees are rich and saturated color, with a guaranteed color fastness of 75 years.

The whole idea behind releasing giclee editions is to make Robert's most well-known images available to those who didn't get a chance to buy the serigraphs, which are now sold out. There are also many people who love the images regardless whether or not Robert has signed them.

ARTIST'S PROOFS:Artist's Proofs (A/P's) are usually a very small portion of a limited edition that is set aside for the artist to do with as he pleases. The artist will usually sign (for example)"1/20 artist proof" then a signature as usual.

Common Prints Questions

Why and how do you select the images you publish?
Sometimes Robert selects the prints to be printed (Beloved Music Makers of Days Gone By, for example), and sometimes Alexander Wood. But of course we all have to agree upon it before we get started. If it’s new artwork we’re publishing (BB King), Alex has to work up some pretty clear ideas before I present them to Robert, and he has to like it, as Robert Crumb always has, of course, the final word.

Why do you usually print 100-200 prints per edition?
Where does one draw the line between fine art and commercial art? Between a fine art edition and merchandise? It’s a very difficult thing — especially if you enjoy and esteem the artwork of the commercial artists of the 20’s through the 40’s more than the “fine artists” of that period! But to make a long story short, we feel that an edition much larger than 200 loses its integrity, and can no longer be considered a fine art edition (for better or worse). In fact, in the last few years, we have reduced the editions closer to 100 than 200.

Why do you sell them for so little?
Many people wonder how and why we sell these editions for so little, and I’m continually told that those people interested in collecting Crumb would do so at a higher price point as well. Again, Robert has much to do with establishing our price. He is not a fan of the Modern Art world and we are not only disrespectful of the quality and content of most of the art, but also the way it is sold and marketed. It seems to be very elitist with a lot of glamour and glitter thrown in the selling game. None of these things are interesting to us. Robert feels an allegiance to his audience and feels strongly that if he is going to do these prints, they should be affordable to his audience.

Why are some prints more expensive than others?
Some editions have other parties we must compensate with royalties (Cheap Thrills and BB King, for example).

In 1971, Crumb wrote and illustrated his Mr. Natural #2 comic book. In 2005, Crumb reworked the cover illustration and it was released as a limited serigraph edition later that year. This limited giclee edition is based upon that serigraph edition with minor changes. There are 300 prints in this hand-numbered giclee edition, printed on Somerset Velvet 255 gram enhanced paper using Epson Ultrachrome archival inks. The white paper is 17" x 24". The image size is 13" x 18-3/4".

The illustration was originally done in 1975 as a cover for Arcade Magazine No.2, published by Griffith and Spiegelman. In the early 2000s, Crumb reworked the illustration for a French anthology. This reworked illustration was used for a Wildwood Serigraphs edition released in 2005 which sold out in about a year. This giclee edition is based upon that serigraph edition, with a slight modification to the blend, which was made even smoother. All the colors are extremely rich and vibrant. It's one of the most successful giclee prints we've produced. This is the quintessential Crumb image: the appreciation for the beauty of nature; the horror of its cruelty and mercilessness; and of course a sexy female with big legs!

Crumb Etchings

ETCHINGS: The etching process is an incredibly detailed and laborious medium, but it gives a rich and beautiful image which seldom sell for less than $500. You have an excellent opportunity to buy one of Crumb's famous pieces for less than art school students sell their etchings.

Publisher Alex Wood explains,"I proposed the idea to use the last panel as an etching to Crumb some years ago. Robert thought the drawing was too crude, and didn't want it released in its original form; he would have to rework it for the etching. He ended up starting over from scratch, completely redrawing the image for this edition."

Wildwood Serigraphs and The Official R.Crumb Site are proud to announce the release of a new Crumb etching. The image is from one of Robert's best-known stories "Whiteman Meets Bigfoot." It's the last panel, in fact, and as close as Crumb ever gets to "happily ever after". This story first appeared in Kitchen Sink's Home Grown Funnies, which was their best-selling comic book of all time, with sales of over 160,000 copies. The reason for its popularity was simple: almost the entire book consisted of the legendary "Bigfoot" story; the longest Crumb had produced up until that time. It was upbeat, funny and even romantic -- not the standard Crumb fare.

There are 50 etchings in the edition. The image size is 8" wide by 7" tall. The embossed area is about 9" wide and 8.5" tall. The white archival Hahemuhle paper is 14" wide by 13" tall. Each etching is signed, dated and numbered by Crumb. This is the cleanest, best etching edition we have ever printed, and we give you our unconditional guarantee for your complete satisfaction or your money back.
